This piece is entitled "Puppy Love" by Mark Ulriksen. It is part of The New Yorker's Limited-Edition Cover Collection. I chose to paint this as a dessert of sorts for myself; it was fun, easy and conveyed a light-hearted mood. The rich coral color pops from the canvas and sets off the black typeface and the dog. A small baseball rests a few feet from the dog as he curiously contemplates what to do next. Upon closer look, the brushstrokes of the background follow overlapping lines to give the image slight depth. The shadow of the dog and ball gives the painting a unique perspective.
