Welcome to the Triangle

Welcome to the Triangle. 2005.
Oil on canvas.
h24 x w36 in.
Private Collection.

This painting captures various landmarks of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, the three cities that comprise the Triangle area of North Carolina. From right to left, the images are: the Bell Tower on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, the RBC Center, the old capital building in downtown Raleigh, the Raleigh skyline, the Old Well on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and Duke Chapel on the campus of Duke University in Durham. Each image blends into the next, creating a seamless transition from one to the next. The blending of all the images corresponds to the blending of the three cities into the Triangle. The major universities in the area, though rivals, bring this area of North Carolina and its people together. The proximity of the cities allow for growth in business, technology, research and education. Known as one the best places to live in North Carolina, the Triangle holds many opportunities for recent graduates, young families and businessmen and women.

After sketching the layout and finding an appropriate space for each image to create a good subject, I under painted the subject to set the values for the colors I would later use. At first the colors I used were too dark, and the grays were flat. I quickly realized that more color was needed to brighten each image and make it stand out, while at the same time bringing all the images together to make sure they flowed seamlessly into one another. Purples and yellows were added to the grays to brighten up the shadowing of the buildings. I mixed yellow into the green to make the grass and trees at the bottom of the skyline pop. The Bell Tower dominates the right side of the painting. The brightness of the Durham Bulls Athletic Park balances this out, and the eye is drawn from one side to the other.

The Duke Chapel presented a problem with the balance of the painting. To counteract this, I added a sun and clouds to balance all the images within the painting. The sun was needed as the source of light as well, and appropriate shading and coloring was added to the images.

This piece was commissioned by Labrador Financial Services, Inc., a financial services company in Cary, North Carolina. This piece was used in a print ad for a relocation guide for the Triangle.
