Flowers in Clay Pots

Flowers in Clay Pots. 2005.
Oil on canvas.
h24 x w18 in.
SOLD - Private Collection.
This piece shows an arrangement of colorful flowers in a clay pot and an empty clay jug beside it. I like this subject because of the bright colors and the constrasting colors between the flowers, the pots and the muted background. In addition to the contrasting colors, there is also a contrast between the subjects. The soft flowers and leaves are complimented by the hard surface of the pots; the contrast between the physical parts of the subject are just as interesting as the contrast between their colors.
For this piece, I wanted to blend more of the colors and lines. To achieve a smooth look, I mixed liquin with my paints, a medium that increases the flow of the paint on the canvas. While there is very little actual texture of paint on the canvas, the texture of the subject leaps off the canvas because of the blending of the colors. I wanted to stick to a more abstract feel, conveying more of a feeling of spring time and gardens, rather than sticking to strict detail.
This piece was easy to complete, as the liquin allowed for easy flow of the paint and a quicker drying time. I thoroughly enjoyed this piece and I feel it came at the right time for spring.
