The Sculler

The Sculler. 2005.
Oil on canvas.
h18 x w24 in.
SOLD - Private Collection.

This picture is of Charles Reed, coach of the UNC-Wilmington crew team, rowing at a regatta held on the Cape Fear River in Wilmington, North Carolina. A single boat is referred to as a scull, thus the name of the painting. The colors for UNCW are blue, yellow and a dark teal as shown in the uniform worn by Charles.

The bright colors of the uniform and the boat contrast nicely with the color of the water. I used mainly primary colors to achieve the bold look of the subject. The challenge I found while painting this piece was achieving a realistic effect of the reflections in the water and the ripple effects from the oars. Darker blues and purples were used at the bottom of the painting to create perspective and depth. I added white to the top of the canvas to help complete the perspective.

I thoroughly enjoyed painting this piece. The red pops from the canvas and all the bright colors work together to create a fun and captivating image.

Brilliant! The painting is beautiful, Melanie! I know Charles is going to love it. Can't wait to unveil it at the banquet later this month!
