Life can be a whirlwind at times, and we may only know what happened to us after the fact. Stages of life seamlessly overlap one another and before we can imagine what time will bring to us, we are in the midst of it. In this piece, I wanted to capture the emotion of the line that divides one stage in life from the next. Often blurred and unnoticable, these lines that separate our life into segments bleed into one another to give us the sense of a single life. But there are so many stages of experience that it's no wonder the phrase "it was a lifetime ago" is so familiar to each of us. Suddenly we find ourselves at the next "stage of life" and we wonder how we got there. We wonder how the previous stage passed us by so quickly. Just as we start to identify with a certain time in our life, we are forced into the next stage. Sometimes this is by choice, but more often than not, life grabs us and we must hold on tightly.

A faint purple line runs the length of the painting, signifying the line between two life stages. The white lines on the bottom dart across the canvas, while the white line across the top appears stronger and more deliberate. We want to rush the maturing process when we are younger, and slow it down a bit once maturity (and age) set in. In high school we can't wait to drive, to vote, to graduate. In college we can't wait for the first party, the first spring break, the first legal drink of beer. As we grow more into becoming our own person, we realize how sweet it is to live in the moment and not rush things so much. We make a deliberate attempt to be more deliberate. We focus on our future as we did in school, but in a different way. We look back on our stages with wonder, and suddenly realize the vividness of the line that divides.

Brilliant! I love your abstract stuff so much. This piece reminds me of the artwork from the new Nine Inch Nails album, "With Teeth."
